![]() Several Hall of Famers have relatives coming up through the ranks.Two of his grandfather’s brothers, Hector and Tommy, also played in the majors. Trei Cruz was drafted out of high school in the 35 th round of the draft by the Houston Astros, the team his grandfather (Jose) and father (Jose Jr.) previously played for.His uncle, Aaron Boone, was also a major-leaguer. His family tree includes great-grandfather Ray Boone, grandfather Bob Boone, and father Bret Boone. If he were to eventually make it to the majors, he would become part of the first four-generation family of major leaguers. Jake Boone was drafted out of high school in the 38 th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals.Some of the more noteworthy relatives from the 2017 season include the following: The increase stems from the six additional seasons since the book was published, as well as the inclusion of additional minor league players and major league non-players I have discovered since then. That’s more than double the number I had initially identified in my Family Ties book through the 2011 season. My entire database now has over 7,400 individuals (all years) representing over 12,000 relationships. My sources of information are primarily based on the major league team media guides, Major League Baseball websites, selected baseball magazines, and searches of the internet for current articles in newspapers and posts on blogs and websites. But I believe it results in one of the most comprehensive databases of baseball relatives information that I’m aware of. The process involved in the compilation activity requires arduous and time-consuming research. I just completed my annual compilation and have posted the results on my Baseball Relatives website. In addition, a resume and links to some of my best work can be found on this site.Some of you already know one of my special interests in baseball research is identifying all the professional baseball players, managers, coaches, scouts, executives, broadcasters, owners, front office personnel, umpires, and clubhouse staff who have a relative that was also in some capacity in pro baseball. I have a passion for journalism and look forward to continuing my career in Holland. I have accepted a job offer to become a cops and courts reporter with The Holland Sentinel. This May, I will graduate from Michigan State University and move to Holland, Michigan. I even rode around East Lansing in the back of a famous monkey-covered van while reporting for The State News. I reported on the sexual harassment from the Spartan Marching Band director and the university investigation that followed. I uncovered a dysfunctional police oversight committee. I covered East Lansing City Council meetings, debates and East Lansing’s 2015 City Council election. While other newspapers in the Lansing area wrote about new and improved recycling practices in East Lansing, I found more than 12,000 residents without access to on-site recycling because of city ordinances. In addition, I have covered a range of stories, including everything from features to investigative pieces, since I started at The State News. To manage that, I coordinate between the newsroom departments, work with section editors to plan content and help reporters develop stories.Īs editor-in-chief, I have increased the number of visitors to by 62 percent since August 2016. We produce two print newspapers a week, a daily newsletter and a robust website. I also filled in for The Gazette’s military reporter during the last two weeks of my internship.Īt The State News, I lead a newsroom with a staff of about 35 people. I filled in for The Gazette’s cops and court reporters for several days during different parts of the summer. In addition to features, I covered breaking news and crime. ![]() One of these stories featured cadets’ first day at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and the other was about volunteers fixing the home of a WWII veteran. Last summer I interned at The Colorado Springs Gazette on the news desk.ĭuring my time with The Gazette two of my stories were centerpiece stories and printed on the front page of the newspaper. I filled the roles of general assignment reporter, city reporter, city and capitol reporter and features editor before taking over as editor-in-chief at The State News. I am the editor-in-chief at The State News, Michigan State University’s award-winning student newspaper.
